They Paved Paradise

July 15, 2010

So on the way out to my car last night, I heard the parking lot attendant say to a girl, “Ca va?”

Odd to hear french in that parking lot, right? Interesting too, because this particular parking lot guy is always very flirty with me.

Anyway, the next morning, he’s out in the parking lot shouting about how hot it will be. I think he was making people nervous.

“When it’s hot, I get loud,” he shouts in my general direction.

I laughed and said, “Where are you from?”

And of course, it’s Haiti.

I said, “Oh, I’m going there in a couple months.”

“Why?”

“To do work. To help.”

His response was unbelievable.

He was actually speechless. He’s never speechless.
Then he very seriously thanked me for going, asked me to let him know before I go and asked if he could give me a hug.

It was all a very cheering first thing in the morning.

And now I think I have a place where I can practice my french!
