The Choice

September 8, 2010

For the longest time, the most notable thing to have happened on my birthday was that Pete Rose broke Ty Cobb’s hitting record in 1985.

Saturday, September 11th would be the 25 year anniversary of that feat.

Of course, for the last 9 years, my birthday has been associated with the terrible tragedy at the World Trade Center/Pentagon. It’s been a national day of mourning. A time of remembrance.

This year, there’s been a weird backlash where some people want to turn it into a day of hate.

We all have a choice to make. Not just on September 11th, but every day. We can be people who celebrate and remember the best in people or we can turn to hate.

For me, the choice has always been clear.

I choose to celebrate this life and remember that people we have lost. I find the best way to do that is to give back. That’s why I’m going to Haiti next month.

If you wish to give back this September 11th, here are some great options that will benefit the people of Haiti and suffering people around the world:

Doctors Without Borders

Red Cross

Of course, if you are looking for something with a bit more of a personal connection, I welcome donations to my volunteer trip here: Haiti Aid Trip.

Even if you can’t afford to give money, there are many local service organizations that can always use a helping hand. Visit Volunteer Match for ideas in your area!

No matter what you do, I encourage you on September 11th and always to live your life with joy and kindness toward others.

That’s the best choice.
